Ofsted Report November 2016

Ofsted Inspection Judgement:

You will be aware that Weston Favell Academy was visited by Ofsted in November 2016.  Despite the tremendous improvements evident across the academy in teaching and learning, student behaviour, and following our best GCSE and A Level results for a decade in August 2016, we are stunned that Ofsted have judged us to be inadequate and placed the academy in Special Measures.

We do not believe that this is a special measures school and we will be challenging this judgement through the Ofsted complaints procedure.

Parent Views:

We are delighted that your views in the Ofsted parent survey showed great support for the academy. Over 80% of parents say:

  • children are well looked after and safe
  • pupils are well behaved
  • children are happy here and would recommend this school
  • the school is well led and managed

National Schools Commissioner:

Ofsted did not give the academy the recognition it deserves.  The National Schools Commissioner, Sir David Carter, visited Weston Favell Academy just days before the Ofsted visit.  He was clear in his praise of the hard work being done here to lead improvements and said that school improvement takes time. He was impressed by the calm learning environment we have established and took to social media to praise our academy and celebrate our improved progress.

2016 Examination Results:

Ofsted failed to consider our 2016 outcomes, the best in a decade, in making this judgement.

The academy has also made great strides in the development of teaching and learning with the commitment and hard work of all of its teachers. This is evident when we consider the pleasing GCSE results achieved this summer:

  • 18% increase in the number of students leaving the academy with a A* - C in GCSE in English and Maths
  • A* - C in Maths increased by 24% to within 1% of the national average.

These figures make us the most improved secondary academy in The Greenwood Academies Trust.  In September 2016, we started the academic year fully staffed with qualified teachers in all subjects for the first time since becoming an academy.  This proves how far we have come and the confidence that experienced professionals have in our school.

Behaviour:

This report does not recognise the pride our students have in their academy and their hard work in transforming it.  Since introducing Positive Discipline we have a calm, safe and orderly environment. They saw no low level disruption throughout the inspection as is typical in the academy.  Despite this, Ofsted were still concerned that a minority of students are excluded or have poor absence to the academy.  This skewed their opinion of behaviour in the academy.

Next Steps:

As Principal, I remain totally committed to driving the further sustained and rapid improvements recommended in the report and provide the standards of education that the children of this community deserve.  Our journey continues.

Thank you for your continued support of our work.  The Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust will be inviting parents to a meeting next term to discuss the findings of the report and share our improvement plans for the future.  I will write to you early in the New Year to confirm this date.
