Weston Favell Academy

Curriculum Intent: Academy

All pupils at Weston Favell Academy have access to a rich, broad and balanced curriculum.  The curriculum is engineered to ensure pupils are equipped with the qualifications, knowledge, experiences & skills to succeed in life & progress onto meaningful employment with training or further & higher education.

Key features of our curriculum include:

  • All pupils in Years 7 to 11 have 25 lessons a week with each period lasting 60 minutes
  • Reading for pleasure is modelled by teachers and promoted through tutor time guided reading, accelerated reader, timetabled library lessons, enrichment book clubs and assemblies
  • Broad, ambitious & grounded in the national curriculum – so that all groups of pupils have access to both academic & vocational programmes of study where challenge, achievement & progress are expected for all.
  • Knowledge rich – so that all pupils acquire the core knowledge to which they are entitled & the powerful knowledge they need to expand beyond their own experiences.
  • Intelligently planned – sequenced to incrementally build long-term knowledge & develop cross-curricula schema, using evidence-based strategies to maximise learning.
  • Culturally rich – broadening horizons & exposing pupils to the vast wealth of experiences in the wider global society be that the arts, music, sport & extra-curricular pursuits
  • Character building – providing opportunities to develop leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative & communication skills from year 7 to 13.
  • Context-specific – so that pupils who are not yet secondary ready, or not yet confident in the English language can rapidly catch up & access the full curriculum, & those with limited opportunities to explore the world beyond Northampton can broaden their horizons.
  • Values-driven – to develop principled young people who respect others in all their diversity, put kindness at the heart of all their decisions & strive to achieve excellence in all they do.

KS3

Pupils study the full range of national curriculum subjects consisting of; English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, RE, French, Performing Arts (Music, Drama), Computing, Design and Technology, Art and PE (including Dance) in order to build a strong base of core knowledge.  There is a focus on developing the literacy, numeracy & study skills required for GCSE.  Our Character & Culture curriculum aims to broaden horizons & equip pupils to choose GCSE options that inspire them.

KS4

Pupils typically study 9 subjects in depth. Critical thinking, problem solving, & communication skills develop alongside a deepening knowledge base. There is an increasing focus on independent learning & personal responsibility.  Our Character & Culture curriculum aims to give pupils the chance to explore their strengths & empower them to make informed choices about future plans in further education, or employment with training.

KS5

Pupils in year 12 & 13 focus on 3 or 4 subjects in great depth & with increasing independence. Pupils are role models & are encouraged to take on leadership responsibilities within the academy.  Pupils engage with the wider community & participate in local, national & global collaborations.  Pupils leave with the skills & attributes necessary for success in higher education, or employment with training.
